Parenting Skills / Angry Kids

Anger Management Skills and Training offers Parenting Skills classes as well as family counseling. Dr. Kaplan helps parents, children, and teenagers, overcome repetitive conflict and poor communication.

Dr. Kaplan has been successful in teaching parents basic parenting skills, as well as helping address more serious conditions related to: Asperger's Syndrome, Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD / ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). Children who have been adopted (even as infants) may often display variations of the above conditions.

Parents often feel frustrated by the constant power struggles and opposition to their authority when their child refuses to follow basic rules to keep the home protected and safe. When a child is defiant, he / she not only disrupts the atmosphere in the home, but also sets a poor example for other siblings. In such situations, some parents may become frustrated and react in inappropriate ways that result in further tension with their spouse or other family members.

Dr. Kaplan provides Parenting Skills and family counseling, and is a specialist in working with difficult adolescents and children. As a former psychologist at nationally known residential school in Westchester, NY, he has successfully worked with many youth considered 'hard to treat'. In addition, he is the author of a chapter in a professional volume series specializing in the treatment of anti-social youth.

Over many years of practice, he developed the 'free will motivation' method based on paradoxical interventions. The approach is particularly well suited for helping parents engage defiant teens and youth. In short, the method helps both parent and child recognize habitual patterns that undermines meaningful communication. In a non-confrontational and non-blaming manner, the method helps both parent and child realize the predictable and rigid behavior patterns they have become locked into. By recognizing repetitive cycles that promote frustration in the family, both parent and child often become motivated to undo and exit these destructive patterns.

Parenting Skills classes (see The Program) in which the parent attends for personal growth will provide new insights as to how to improve family communication. In addition, those who attend family counseling sessions can work to resolve immediate parent-child issues. Dr. Kaplan has expertise in family treatment, and it is likely that the family will see positive results even after the first session. Certificates indicating the number of sessions attended will be provided as 'proof' for court or child-welfare agencies. With court permission, it is possible that certificates can 'mix and match' Parenting Skills with family counseling sessions.

Parents who have been dealing with a disruptive behavior for months or years are often surprised by the quick turn around in their child or teenager's behavior following Parenting Skills classes and / or family counseling with Dr. Kaplan.
