Dr. Eliot P. Kaplan holds a PhD in Counseling Psychology, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York State, and is a Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS). He is the founder and director of The Paradox Psychology Institute. He has been counseling adults, adolescents, and families since 1983. Most recently he worked as a specialist in treating Problem Sexual Behaviors (PSB) behaviors in a nationally known adolescent residential facility for boys in Westchester, NY, and as result of his success published a chapter in a professional volume series on this topic.
Dr. Kaplan offers a relaxed style that allows clients to feel comfortable as they address their personal issues. He is aware that it is a 'guy thing' for males (adolescents and adults) to be cautious when first attending counseling. In such situations he is able to acknowledge these concerns, while promoting a safe atmosphere to address anger management and relationship issues.
Dr. Kaplan's work focuses on strategic and rapid behavior change based on paradoxical interventions. Interventions utilize the 'free will motivation' method which capitalizes on the success of 'win-win double binds'. The advantage of this method is that is a non-confrontational approach, and promotes adolescents and adults to change through awareness and education. By learning to recognize the early warning signs, habitual reactions, and trigger situations, clients gain the tools to 'back out' or undo troublesome or destructive patterns. This type of change occurs easily and without the struggle people often associate with the counseling process. Dr. Kaplan lectures nationally to mental health providers regarding the utilization of this method for anger management, impulse control problems, oppositional defiant disorder, and other serious volatile behaviors.
